The matrix multiply (X*Y) and matrix power (X^p) operators show significant increase in speed on large double-precision arrays (on order of 10,000 elements). As a general rule, complicated functions speed up more than simple functions. The operation is not memory-bound processing time is not dominated by memory access time. For example, most functions speed up only when the array contains several thousand elements or more. Even a single number is stored as a matrix. The elements can be numbers, logical values (true or false), dates and times, strings, categorical values, or some other MATLAB data type. A matrix is a two-dimensional, rectangular array of data elements arranged in rows and columns. However, when you transpose A, you need to re-arrange the elements in memory (copying and swapping) and this takes time. The most basic MATLAB data structure is the matrix. Thus A(:) simply changes the header of the matrix but does not need to change enything in the memory storing the elements themselfs. The data size is large enough so that any advantages of concurrent execution outweigh the time required to partition the data and manage separate execution threads. Think about how the elements are organized in memory. They should require few sequential operations. These sections must be able to execute with little communication between processes.
